Thanks to Wilkes descendant Ivan Ernest Bass and his book "Wilkes Family History and Genealogy" published in 1965, we have a great deal of information on the Wilkes and the Carters, who were joined in marriage in about 1823.

Thomas Wilkes was born about 1735 in Virginia or North Carolina, probably of English descent. The Carters were in Virginia by 1750 when Joseph died there. Reuben Wilkes and Churchill Carter both served in the South Carolina Militia during the Revolutionary War.

William Carter married Mary Wilkes about 1823 in Chester County, South Carolina, and they moved to Harris/Talbot Counties, Georgia, about 1828. Check out the Patterson/Ellison/Terry families for another connection to Chester County, SC, and Harris/Talbot Counties, GA.
