Our German-American ancestor Henry Speiser (son of Johannes Speiser) immigrated to Bridgeport, Connecticut from the Kingdom of Württemberg (or Wuerttemberg) in Germany first about 1869 for 3 or 4 years, and then again about 1878 or 9. His first wife Sophie Eisenhardt, followed him in July 1880. After her death, he married my great-grandmother Babette Habann, also a German immigrant from Württemberg.
Babette Habann was born out of wedlock to her mother Babette Merz and Karl Habann. Babette Merz also had her son Charles Merz outside of marriage. Her third child that survived to adulthood was Anna Straub from Babette Merz's marriage to Johannes Straub. In 1883, Babette Merz, her husband Johannes Straub, their daughter Anna, and Babette's children Babette Habann and Charles Merz immigrated from Gruibingen in the Kingdom of Württemberg in Germany. Shortly after they immigrated, Babette Merz Straub's half-sisters Elizabeth Börschl and Margaret Börschl (or Boerschel) followed them to the United States.
Thanks to cousin Hans B. in Austria, we are adding more to our American and European family history including four additional Speiser families that immigrated to the US - John & Louisa Speiser (Philadelphia), Marie Speiser & Gustav Kolb (Chicago), Lore Speiser & Walter Herzer (Allentown, PA), and Anna Maria Speiser (b. 1843, unknown US location).
